Después de la avalancha de productos publicitados como alimentos que ayudan a nuestra flora microbiana intestinal, nadie debería sorprenderse al saber que en nuestras entrañas viven 10 veces más células bacterianas que células tiene el propio cuerpo humano. Lo que sí resulta sorprendente es el descubrimiento de que las personas pueden agruparse en tres grupos diferenciados según la flora bacteriana presente en su intestino.
El microbioma humano, como se denomina al catálogo de especies que eligen algún recoveco del ser humano como hábitat normal, está poco explorado. La flora intestinal, por ejemplo, se simplifica tradicionalmente como una simbiosis nutritiva de la que obtenemos alguna vitamina, pero aún no sabemos exactamente qué especies la componen. Ahora, un grupo de investigadores ha encontrado tres 'enterotipos', tres ecosistemas diferentes en las vueltas y revueltas del intestino. Y al igual que con el grupo sanguíneo, cada persona tiene el suyo.
El estudio, que aparecerá publicado en Nature, describe cómo las muestras genómicas obtenidas a partir de la materia fecal de 39 personas se pueden clasificar en 3 grupos claramente diferenciados por la composición de especies bacterianas encontradas en ellas. Estas diferencias no se deben, según los autores, ni al sexo del individuo, ni a su origen étnico. Aunque 39 muestras son muy pocas para garantizar la robustez de los grupos encontrados, Peer Bork, uno de los autores del descubrimiento, declaró a Nature News que en el año transcurrido desde que enviaran el artículo para su publicación ya han analizado más de 400 muestras y los resultados se mantienen.
Las razones para que distintas personas tengan diferente diversidad microbiana en su intestino no están claras, pero el hecho podría tener implicaciones para la salud ya que no todas las bacterias producen las mismas substancias ni son capaces de digerir los mismos compuestos o de igual modo Así, el balance metabólico de la flora intestinal (de lo que se nutren y los productos resultantes) puede ser diferente de un tipo a otro. Según Peer Bork, el enterotipo 1, con una cierta abundancia en especies del género Bacteroides, podría producir más vitamina B7, mientras que el enterotipo 2, con pocas Bacteroides pero más Prevotella produciría más de la vitamina B1. El enterotipo 3 se caracteriza por la elevada presencia de Ruminococcus, género bacteriano que debe su nombre al rumen, primera cavidad del estómago del ganado, donde estas y otras bacterias producen la fermentación de la fibra del pasto ingerido por el animal como alimento. Distintos enterotipos podrían pues actuar de diferente manera en la digestión y absorción de los hidratos de carbono, con posibles consecuencias dietéticas.
Este descubrimiento podría también resultar relevante para el diagnóstico y el tratamiento de las enfermedades que afectan al aparato digestivo, como intolerancias alimenticias, el síndrome de intestino irritable o la enfermedad de Crohn.
