 Hace una semana entrevistaban a Ben Goldacre en Público. Hoy entrevistan a Ben Goldacre en lainormacion.com. No es David Bisbal ni Daniel Diges, aunque lo parezca, pero sí es una especie de celebrity. 100.000 personas siguen su cuenta de twitter y ha vendido más de 250.000 ejemplares de su libro Bad Science ( Mala Ciencia, recientemente publicado en España). Este psiquiatra escribe desde 2003 una columna semanal en The Guardian en la que ataca sin misericordia los errores de la ciencia publicada, vigilando desde esa atalaya tanto a periodistas como a científicos aquejados por la falta de rigor, la exageración o directamente la mala intención. Tres citas entresacadas de las dos entrevistas antes mencionadas: "Es demasiado común leer noticias supuestamente científicas tan ridículas y tan obviamente equivocadas que es muy difícil no sentirse frustrado y decepcionado con la prensa. Lo que hice cuando empecé a escribir fue convertirme en portavoz de millones de amantes de la ciencia cabreados de alrededor del mundo."
"El trabajo del periodista es escrutar al científico, saber quién es y qué nos vende, pero también conocer a fondo el contenido de su estudio. Es razonable exigir que quien escribe conozca lo elemental de esa área."
"Si un científico viene y dice que “X e Y son verdad”, eso no es suficiente para mí, quiero saber por qué piensan que X e Y son ciertas y qué experimentos se han hecho. No quiero oír simplemente a una figura de autoridad con una bata blanca, o una falsa bata blanca, contándome las conclusiones." Su postura es claramente la de un científico indignado. Indignado con los medios que tratan de manera superficial el contenido científico, indignado con los científicos que manipulan experimentos para que digan lo que ellos quieren. La ciencia sabe qué hacer con los fraudes científicos. Es parte del sistema que unos se vigilen a los otros, que se reproduzcan los experimentos, o que se diseñen otros nuevos asumiendo que los anteriores eran ciertos. Inevitablemente, todo fraude termina siendo descubierto cuando las piezas dejan de encajar. El fraude periodístico es distinto. Los periodistas no se vigilan unos a otros, no se comunican entre ellos. No es su misión. Su misión es hacer llegar a otros, los lectores, cierta información. Mientras que en la ciencia hay mecanismos de feedback, de comunicación bidireccional entre pares, el periodismo es unidireccional. El científico puede detectar y defenderse del fraude, pero el ciudadano no, el ciudadano está expuesto a que leyendo el periódico, oyendo la radio, viendo la tele o navegando por internet le cuelen como verdad algo que no lo es. El periodista, por tanto, tiene la obligación de que lo que sale de su pluma sea cierto, de no inventarse nada y a la vez darse cuenta de cuándo se lo está inventando el científico. No es tarea fácil y muchas veces simplemente se recurre a un modelo prefijado de noticia científica para salir del paso, usando una supuesta "licencia periodística" para embellecer los resultados y sustituyendo el contraste de las fuentes con el simple entrecomillado de las citas.
Un caso claro que une ambas situaciones es lo vivido el último mes tras el desastroso accidente de la central nuclear de Fukushima Daichii. Es lógico que un periodista no sepa de radiación y centrales nucleares. Si lo hiciese, sería ingeniero nuclear y trabajaría en una de ellas. Por tanto, a la hora de hablar de la situación real y los riesgos para la población, lo que debe hacerse es recurrir a la opinión de expertos. Expertos que, cada uno, tienen su propia agenda y, sobre todo, su propio área de experiencia. El periodista no sólo debe recurrir a más de un experto, sino que debe averiguar los intereses de cada uno de ellos antes de reproducir lo que le han dicho. Las prisas por informar, sin embargo, pudieron más y en la mayor parte de los casos se difundieron rumores y exageraciones (de cada uno de los bandos) y la habitual aglomeración en el metro tokiota a la hora de volver a casa al finalizar la jornada laboral se convirtió en imagen de la huida desesperada de los japoneses.
La víctima de esto es el público, pero también el propio medio periodístico. Cada vez más los ciudadanos tienen a su disposición multitud de fuentes de información y, lo que quizá sea más importante, la capacidad de contrastar ellos mismos lo que se les dice. Las fuentes primarias tienen a su disposición un medio para que su mensaje sea lanzado, así que lo hacen. Basta con utilizar un buscador web para encontrar información más que suficiente sobre cualquier tema. Al poco de producirse la catástrofe, ya corrían por blogs y twitter el diseño de la planta accidentada, recuentos actualizados con la última hora desde Japón e infografías poniendo en perspectiva el significado de las fugas.
¿Cómo hacer buen periodismo científico entonces? Tim Radford nos da unos consejos, que básicamente se resumen en hacer buen periodismo. Especial atención merece el último: 25. Writers have a responsibility, not just in law. So aim for the truth. If that's elusive, and it often is, at least aim for fairness, the awareness that there is always another side to the story. Beware of all claims to objectivity. This one is the dodgiest of all. You may report that the Royal Society says that genetic modification is a good thing, and that depleted uranium is mostly harmless. But you should remember that genetic modification was invented by people who were immediately elected to the Royal Society for their cleverness, by people already in there because they knew how to enrich uranium fuel rods and deplete the rest. So to paraphrase Miss Mandy Rice-Davies (1963) "They would say that, wouldn't they?" Ben Goldacre, en sus entrevistas, remarcaba el lado positivo de que en internet cualquier científico puede hacer divulgación. Y eso es algo muy positivo, más científicos deberían hacerlo. Pero el lector sigue estando desprotegido ante la manipulación, tiene que sustituir el criterio del (buen) periodista por el suyo propio. Y si bien Tim Radford nos advierte de no asumir que el lector es idiota, sí que es cierto que no tiene por qué ser experto en todo lo que le interesa leer. Los medios periodísticos tradicionales podrán caer a los pies del poder informativo de una simple búsqueda en Google, pero la sociedad en su conjunto sigue necesitando que haya periodistas que hagan bien su trabajo. Todos los divulgadores científicos del mundo no sustituyen la labor de un solo buen periodista científico. Que, dicho sea de paso, también puede hacer buena divulgación.
Por si no os habíais dado cuenta, los dos trabajan para el mismo periódico. Ya sabéis dónde ir para leer buena ciencia. Y de paso, también podéis recurrir a este medio para aprender a escribir sobre ciencia para el público general.

"Dar la primicia" ha sido siempre lo importante. Menos importante antes que hoy, cuando todo va más rápido de lo que podemos seguir.
La diferencia entre un reportaje, un documental y una opinión eran relativamente claras, hasta que las prisas llevaron a publicar "material sin editar" como si tal cosa fuera un mérito.
Material sin clasificar, sin pulir, sin una redacción clara y con referencias para quienes no están obligados a saber sobre el tema que leen.
Hacen falta buenos periodistas en todos los campos; en especial en el del periodismo científico, pues de los malentendidos que generan en la mente del lector desprevenido surgen rumores catastrofistas que nunca son desmentidos.
Lo peor no es eso, es que el público pierde confianza, buscando otras fuentes que tergiversan el contenido y ¿cómo revertir tal actitud?
Para mal o para bien, tiempo atrás era común oír "Lo dice La Nación"..."Lo dijo La Prensa"...La gente confiaba y citaba como palabra de santo a la fuente de información. Hoy urge hallar una solución a ese descrédito.
