Los siempre avispados reporteros del telediario (TVE Internacional) anunciaban la llegada de una nueva teoría de la evolución de la mano del descubrimiento de un par de nuevos fósiles homínidos. Como ya estoy cansado de decir siempre lo mismo, me limitaré a hablar sobre lo publicado, no sobre lo dicho. O sea: la teoría (de la evolución humana, que los epítetos especificativos están para ser usados) venía diciendo que Homo habilis se transformaba en H. erectus sin que miembros de una especie convivieran con los de la otra (anagénesis que se llama la cosa) y ahora resulta que los Leakey han encontrado en el mismo área sendos fósiles de cada especie, un maxilar de habilis -1.44 millones de años- y una pequeña calavera (cráneo sin mandíbula) de erectus -1.55 millones de años-, lo que sugeriría que ambas especies habrían coexistido durante un período de tiempo que los autores cifran en cerca de medio millón de años. Ya tenía yo ganas de volver a dar noticias, ya.

Interesante, 500 mil años es bastante timepo para la convivencia en una misma región de dos especies bastante "humanas".Eso pese a las típicas presunciones progresistas de que no sería sino inevitable que el erectus, más tecnológico y de cerebro más grande, desplazara al habilis. Y resulta que no. Por 500 mil años!

En primer lugar, dudo mucho que la equeña calota pertenezca aun erectus/ergaster; de ser así, y como dicen los autores, H. erectus presentaría un dimorfismo sexual extremadamente alto, similar al de los gorilas, cosa poco probable en bandas que vivían en las sabanas y que, seguramente, practicaban algún tipo de caza. En segundo lugar, también es difícil adscribir el fragmento de maxilar a H. habilis, a menos que se describa la morfología de la entrada de la nariz. Realmente la evolución humana sigue siendo un rompecabezas.
