Cuando redacté la entrada anterior sobre el aburrimiento la planteé como una vaga pregunta retórica que (como todas las preguntas retoricas, que si no no lo sería) pide a gritos una respuesta trivial: uno se aburre porque no tiene nada que hacer.
Ante esta obviedad muchos son los que han reaccionado asombrandose de que alguien pueda llegar a aburrirse (por ejemplo, JJ expresa su asombro aquí).
Pero yo quería llegar más allá de la reflexión inicial, lograr que pensemos acerca de algo que puede que no sea tan obvio: por qué demonios nos aburrimos, de dónde viene ese horror vacui ante la ausencia de actividad.
Es más, ¿por qué asumir que uno se aburre sólo cuando está ocioso? Un libro puede ser aburrido, un programa de la tele también, lo mismo que una persona con la que mantienes una conversación. Cierto es que ante una situación así, dada la actual abundancia de posibilidades, podemos elegir dejar de aburrirnos y ponernos a hacer otra cosa (salvo que uno se aburra con su trabajo y no pueda cambiarlo), pero me interesaría mucho saber las razones que justifican el sentimiento en sí, por qué para que hagamos algo tenemos que sentirnos entretenidos y si algo nos aburre no lo hacemos o lo hacemos a regañadientes. En definitiva, ¿por qué nos aburrimos?

Pues no, no estoy de acuerdo.
Uno no se aburre cuando no tiene nada que hacer.
Uno se aburre cuando tiene que hacer por obligación algo que no le gusta hacer y _además_ es una actividad que no le permite a uno fantasear (vease el artículo cientíifico que puse en el otro post sobre las posibilidades de fantasear haciendo otras cosas).
Si uno puede fantasear, pensar en otras cosas, uno no se aburre nunca, al menos una no se aburre nunca :)
Así que como te decía donde JJ, para mí una actividad que no me gusta, que solo hago por obligación y que no me deja pensar en otras cosas es por definición una actividad "aburrida".
Es decir solo me aburro realmente, cuando:
-tengo que hacer algo por obligación que no me gusta
-ese algo no me deja pensar en otras cosas
Por eso más que "¿por qué nos aburrimos? de donde viene ese horror vacui ante la falta de actividad", para mi la pregunta que tiene sentido es "¿en qué circunstancias nos aburrimos?"
A esa pregunta ya hay tres respuestas:
- BioMaxi: parece aburrirse ante la falta de actividad
-JJ: parece aburrirse ante la falta de posibilidad de cambiar de actividad
- yo me aburro ante la imposibilidad de pensar en otras cosas mientras hago por obligación algo que no me gusta
¿Quien da más?

BioMaxi, me da que existe bastante variabilidad en la tolerancia al aburrimiento. Unos nos volvemos nerviosos e incluso nos irritamos cuando no podemos salir de una situación aburrida. Otros pasan tranquilamente el rato, sin problemas. Hay quienes tienen trabajos aburridísimos y viven felices, mientras que otros se desesperan o incluso se vuelven locos.
Ya sé que esto no responde a tu pregunta, pero ¡te aguantas! :oD

No sé, pero si nos ponemos en plan darwinista, parece ventajoso para una especie como la nuestra. Si el aburrimiento lleva a la actividad, y la actividad puede ser juego (entrenamiento), exploración (conocimiento del entorno) o sexo (hijitos) o trabajo (creación de herramientas, caza y recolección, etc.), o comunicarse (ventajas sociales) pues entonces sentir aburrimiento puede ser beneficioso. Claro, que también habría desventajas: gasto energético extra, actividades inútiles, absurdas o peligrosas...

No es reventarte el globo, pero hay gente que lleva muchos anyos estudiando el juego en animales (se conoce como una etapa establecida en el desarrollo de muchas especies de mamiferos) y como parte de esta disciplina entra el aburrimiento. Habiendo dicho esto, la pregunta es muy interesante.
La respuesta a la pregunta, que no es respuesta, es que nosotros nos aburrimos porque somo monos y los monos cuando se aburren entran a realizar un sinfin de actividades como las indicadas por Paleo que incentivan el aprendizaje.
Tambien queria anyadir un ultimo pensamiento tangencial: que el aburrimiento es al disenyo inteligente lo que el hombre mas feo del mundo es a Dios.

Para mi la cosa es muy simple, si todo el tiempo fuera diversión, llegaría un momento que se volvería monótono y por tanto nos aburriríamos. Por tanto hace parte de la evolución el aburrimiento, pues por medio de este estado, resolvemos cambiar la rutina, y nos aventuramos a mejorar nuestra condición de vida. De modo que el aburrimiento es un estado inherente a todo aquel que quiere progresar

Creo que necesitamos estar continuamente entretenidos porque cuando realizamos actividades que nos parecen provechosas (aunque realmente no lo sean) tenemos la (falsa) percepción de que el tiempo pasa más despacio. Para no sentir que la vida se nos escapa sin darnos cuenta, es necesario llenarla de recuerdos, experiencias...

porque é artistas, pessoas em princípio muito criativas às vezes decidem aborrecer-se ? porque contra o estabelecido socialmente não podem muita coisa e nós não podemos deixar de ter vida social. Assim, por exemplo eu sei que nunca podia estudar por mim, que tenho todas as ferramentas que preciso, porque neste mundo informação não falta e a mim não falta o gosto por aprender mas, de qualquer maneira decidi aborrecer-me com a "faculdade" e nunca mais láôr os pés por maior e mais bonita que seja a sua biblioteca e por muito importantes que sejam as suas conferencias .
Porquê ? porque já tinha os meus princípios muito vincados e não abdico deles.
Assim prefiro estar à "margem"

Yo creo que nos podemos aburrir porque estamos hechos así. Si es todo adaptación o es algo heredado y adaptado a medias, como la pelvis, es lo que parece dudoso.
El aburriemiento debe ser una de las razones por las que hemos inventado los ordenadores: ellos no se aburren.
Pero, entonces necesitamos *también* realizar tareas aburridas, por lo menos mientras no consigamos que las haga una máquina que funciona sin motivaciones ni estímulos ni nada.
¿Eso es una novedad de nuestra aburrida civilización, para la que no estamos adaptados? ¿O es algo que ha pasado siempre, o sea, nuestros antepasados se aburrían mortalmente mientras masticaban horas y horas trozos de piel o de fibra para ablandarlos, pongamos por caso, o trituraban semillas desganadamente?
En este último caso, el aburrimiento debe tener algún valor adaptativo, como el dolor. O no, y ser un producto de las chapuzas de la evolución, como los partos difíciles.

Abstract
The emerging picture of microbes as gene-swapping collectives demands a revision of such concepts as organism, species and evolution itself.
One of the most fundamental patterns of scientific discovery is the revolution in thought that accompanies a new body of data. Satellite-based astronomy has, during the past decade, overthrown our most cherished ideas of cosmology, especially those relating to the size, dynamics and composition of the Universe.

Similarly, the convergence of fresh theoretical ideas in evolution and the coming avalanche of genomic data will profoundly alter our understanding of the biosphere and is likely to lead to revision of concepts such as species, organism and evolution. Here we explain why we foresee such a dramatic transformation, and why we believe the molecular reductionism that dominated twentieth-century biology will be superseded by an interdisciplinary approach that embraces collective phenomena.
The place to start is horizontal gene transfer (HGT), the non-genealogical transfer of genetic material from one organism to another such as from one bacterium to another or from viruses to bacteria. Among microbes, HGT is pervasive and powerful for example, in accelerating the spread of antibiotic resistance. Owing to HGT, it is not a good approximation to regard microbes as organisms dominated by individual characteristics. In fact, their communications by genetic or quorum-sensing channels indicate that microbial behaviour must be understood as predominantly cooperative.
In the wild, microbes form communities, invade biochemical niches and partake in biogeochemical cycles. The available studies strongly indicate that microbes absorb and discard genes as needed, in response to their environment. Rather than discrete genomes, we see a continuum of genomic possibilities, which casts doubt on the validity of the concept of a 'species' when extended into the microbial realm. The uselessness of the species concept is inherent in the recent forays into metagenomics the study of genomes recovered from natural samples as opposed to clonal cultures. For example, studies of the spatial distribution of rhodopsin genes in marine microbes suggest such genes are 'cosmopolitan', wandering among bacteria (or archaea) as environmental pressures dictate.
Equally exciting is the realization that viruses have a fundamental role in the biosphere, in both immediate and long-term evolutionary senses. Recent work suggests that viruses are an important repository and memory of a community's genetic information, contributing to the system's evolutionary dynamics and stability. This is hinted at, for example, by prophage induction, in which viruses latent in cells can become activated by environmental influences. The ensuing destruction of the cell and viral replication is a potent mechanism for the dispersal of host and viral genes.
It is becoming clear that microorganisms have a remarkable ability to reconstruct their genomes in the face of dire environmental stresses, and that in some cases their collective interactions with viruses may be crucial to this. In such a situation, how valid is the very concept of an organism in isolation? It seems that there is a continuity of energy flux and informational transfer from the genome up through cells, community, virosphere and environment. We would go so far as to suggest that a defining characteristic of life is the strong dependency on flux from the environment be it of energy, chemicals, metabolites or genes.
Nowhere are the implications of collective phenomena, mediated by HGT, so pervasive and important as in evolution. A computer scientist might term the cell's translational apparatus (used to convert genetic information to proteins) an 'operating system', by which all innovation is communicated and realized. The fundamental role of translation, represented in particular by the genetic code, is shown by the clearly documented optimization of the code. Its special role in any form of life leads to the striking prediction that early life evolved in a lamarckian way, with vertical descent marginalized by the more powerful early forms of HGT.
Refinement through the horizontal sharing of genetic innovations would have triggered an explosion of genetic novelty, until the level of complexity required a transition to the current era of vertical evolution. Thus, we regard as regrettable the conventional concatenation of Darwin's name with evolution, because other modalities must also be considered.
This is an extraordinary time for biology, because the perspective we have indicated places biology within a context that must necessarily engage other disciplines more strongly aware of the importance of collective phenomena. Questions suggested by the generic energy, information and gene flows to which we have alluded will probably require resolution in the spirit of statistical mechanics and dynamical systems theory. In time, the current approach of post-hoc modelling will be replaced by interplay between quantitative prediction and experimental test, nowadays more characteristic of the physical sciences.
Sometimes, language expresses ignorance rather than knowledge, as in the case of the word 'prokaryote', now superseded by the terms archaea and bacteria. We foresee that in biology, new concepts will require a new language, grounded in mathematics and the discoveries emerging from the data we have highlighted. During an earlier revolution, Antoine Lavoisier observed that scientific progress, like evolution, must overcome a challenge of communication: "We cannot improve the language of any science without at the same time improving the science itself; neither can we, on the other hand, improve a science without improving the language or nomenclature which belongs to it." Biology is about to meet this challenge.

Yo creo mi estimado redactor de este blog, que leo para no aburrirme, que sólo se aburren los tontos. Permítame explicar mi radical y hasta quizá, vanal comentario.
Una persona cuyo cacumen se encuentra vacío recorre en círculos vicioso su vacuedad sin encontrar cosa alguna en que entretener su poco intelecto. He ahi, el ejemplo de los animales, que aunque algunos den mas señas de inteligencia que muchos de nosotros, sugún estuidios científicos son practicamente seres privados de actividad intelectual. Si por el contrario. Eres un apersona medianamente culta, no deberá preocuparte tal cuestión ya que tu cerebro buscará hasta en el más mínimo detalle un motivo de ocupación. Un contexto muy natural que casi todos compartimos la mayoría del tiempo llevaría a una respuesta del tipo: "porque no tengo nada que hacer". Un respuesta bastante útil que puede proporcionar alguna solución producida por el intelecto a ese, en general, leve dolor que me desasosiega, por ejemplo buscando alguna nueva actividad.
Otro contexto, más elaborado que tendría en cuenta los conocimientos actuales sobre el tema este de la evolución, podría producir otro tipo de respuestas del tipo: "porque es un sentimiento que, como cualquier otro, ha sido producido durante el proceso evolutivo, siendo una "pieza" indispensable para que el bicho en cuestión pueda seguir replicándose".
Uno se aburre y mira distraídamente por la ventana, un pequeño gasto que la evolución parece haber justificado, pues sucede; igual que uno se levanta a por agua cuando tiene sed, o mueve los músculos de la glotis para que esa otra estructura semejante a ti te la acerque.
Pero puede que esta concepción necesite afinarse un poco, al menos para algunos casos particulares pues a ver quién explica porqué la muerte de tu pareja te ha de seguir doliendo largo tiempo en vez de emparejarte al día siguiente. Quizás sea algo así como la consecuencia de un traumatismo que exige una necesaria readaptación de estructuras implicadas. ¿Existen teorías sobre esto?

Cuando joven, BM, reconozco que me aburría.
El cumplir 15 años era (repito: era) para las niñas el permiso para ir a los bailes, al cine, (con compañía, claro), y por sobre todo ¡usar oficialmente el primer par de tacones!.
Durante todo el mes antes del día de mi fiesta creí que no llegaría el día, me pasaban las horas como si fueran días, los días como semanas y las semanas como meses...y eso que había mucho que hacer, probar y reprobar el vestido, tomar fotos, que sí eran tardes enteras ¡por una foto!, ensayar caminar con tacos para no hacer un papelón, ocuparse de la comida que era toda casera y no había freezer, enviar invitaciones y esperar confirmación por correo...
Ese período precumpleaños fue uno de los más aburridos de mi vida.
Ahora, cada cumpleaños llega tan rápido...
Cuando se tienen 15 cumpleaños, el tiempo es relativamente "más" que a los 50. Puede que sea algo evolutivo, ahora no tengo las energías de la juventud, cuando creía que podía todo y que era inmortal. O no pensaba en la muerte.
De lo que ahora,que ya he pasado la mitad de la vida estimada como promedio en este lugar del mundo, ¡no tengo tiempo para aburrirme! Aunque tenga tareas tediosas, ocupo la mente en otras cosas, y en última instancia, tengo muchos recuerdos.
Cuando era joven, no tenía recuerdos para soportar una hora de cola en el odontólogo...Recuerdo cuando mi hijo tenía seis años y empezó un tratamiento odontológico. Se aburría terriblemente en la sala de espera, aunque como era odontólogo de niños daba bien las citas y nunca esperamos más de 15 minutos.
Hablando con él hace un tiempo, me dijo que no iría jamás a ese odontólogo porque "lo hacía esperar todo el día".
Eso quería decir,espero haberme explicado bien.
