 Ya he hablado con anterioridad acerca de la "sopa primordial". Algunos científicos creen que esta sopa era en realidad una sopa de letras. Lo llaman el mundo ARN, puesto que argumentan que el ARN serviría en aquella época tanto de almacén de información genética como de catalizador de reacciones bioquímicas. En las "sopas" modernas (nuestras células), el ARN es un intermediario molecular entre el ADN y las proteínas, pero hay algunos tipos de ARN con actividad enzimática -- el ARN ribosómico es el responsable de la formación de los enlaces peptídicos durante la síntesis de proteínas.
¿Cómo podrían ambas funciones del ARN coexistir a la vez que se permitiese una evolución molecular que, eventualmente, condujese a la formación de la primera célula viva? Se supone que existió una clase especial de ARN, una ribo-ARN-polimerasa. Usando ARN como molde, debería ser capaz de sintetizar una copia exacta (con un ligero margen de error, que sin mutación no hay evolución). La totalidad de los mecanismos propuestos hasta la fecha incluyen la formación de un intermediario de doble hebra: la polimerasa debe crear primero una copia complementaria del molde y con posterioridad repetir el proceso sobre esa copia, generando así una copia idéntica al original.
Esto plantea un nuevo problema: las moléculas de RNA de doble hebra son más estables termodinámicamente, pero no poseen actividad catalítica, de modo que la formación de estos intermedios en realidad se convertiría en un sumidero de moléculas activas. William Taylor ha pensado sobre esto y ha llegado a la siguiente idea 1: la ARN polimerasa añade nucleótidos al extremo 3'. ¿Por qué no al 5'? Si una polimerasa leyese el molde en sentido 3'->5' al tiempo que generase una hebra complementaria también en 3'->5', las dos hebras no serían antiparalelas así que no podrían hibridar aún teniendo secuencias complementarias. Este mecanismo, además, dejaría libre el extremo 3' durante la síntesis, de modo que otra polimerasa podría actuar sobre la hebra aún creciente e ir sintetizando la complementaria, por lo tanto logrando una copia del original sin pasar por un intermediario de doble hebra.
Sin embargo, creo que si las ARN polimerasas de hoy día sintetizan el ARN del modo en que lo hacen, creando una hebra antiparalela que pueda hibridar perfectamente, será por algún buen motivo. Quizá los apareamientos de Watson y Crick no puedan producirse si las dos cadenas son paralelas en vez de antiparalelas (lo que impediría que el mecanismo propuesto por Taylor produjese réplicas de idéntica secuencia). Quizá la energía necesaria para catalizar la extensión 5' es mucho mayor que para la 3'. La verdad es que no lo sé, pero está claro que se necesitan estudios termodinámicos más detallados antes de darle mayor importancia a este nuevo modelo. Aún así, me parece una muy buena idea.

Además de la dificultad que habría para unirse los elementos, está la gran coicidencia de que en el agua coincidieran todos en la misma gota. El paso de monómeros a polímeros (indispensable en el proceso que dio origen a la vida) se da con pérdida de agua, por lo que es difícil explicar cómo pudo darse en medio húmedo, es decir, en la sopa prebiótica.
Se han propuesto distintas hipótesis para explicar cómo pudieron darse estas reacciones. Creo que existe una de la que no puedo encontrar literatura en castellano. Esta es la posibilidad de que esas reacciones de polimerización se hubiesen dado en la alta atmósfera de la tierra primitiva, concretamente en las microgotas heladas de las nubes más altas (que podrían recibir radiaciones solares y cósmicas que aportasen la energía precisa para la reacción.) En torno a las partículas minerales arrastradas por los vientos se condensaría el vapor de agua, tal como ocurre hoy. Ese agua podría contener los monómeros de los que se desconoce qué proceso siguieron para polimerizarse. Al ganar altura y enfriarse, se formaría hielo, que contendría muchos menos monómeros que el agua líquida. Es lo que hoy sucede en la banquisa, en la que los hielos contienen mucha menos sal que el agua circundante. Por tanto, la fase líquida condensaría progresivamente los monómeros facilitando posiblemente las reacciones de polimerización, que tal vez hubiesen estado catalizadas por las partículas minerales que formaron el núcleo de las gotas.
Tengo leído que Woehler hipotetizó sobre el tema del origen de la vida en las gotas de agua atmosféricas. Por desgracia no sé inglés y no he podido encontrar nada de ese autor en castellano o francés. También he leído que, después de defender su opinión durante años, Woelher renunció a su hipótesis.
Esto es todo lo que sé sobre Woehler. Aun sé menos sobre su argumentación. Agradeceré mucho a quien pueda proporcionarme algún dato, sobre todo referencias sobre su hipótesis en alguna lengua latina.

Ayer, día de Darwin, tuve el gusto de asistir a una minicharla de Antonio Lazcano Araujo, quien habló sobre Darwin y sobre el origen de la vida. A continuación citó una serie de moléculas simples que catalizan reacciones de polimerización sin necesidad de condensación previa, hecho que supongo que influiría en Woese para abandonar su hipótesis.
Si es que he conseguido grabar algo (de momento no lo sé) procuraré copiarlo. Pero no esperéis nada de mí, que ya dije que mandaría información de otras charlas y no lo hice.
